No Deaths from Vitamins
America's Largest Database Confirms Supplement Safety
(OMNS, Dec 28, 2011) There was not even one death caused by a vitamin supplement in 2010, according to the most recent information collected by the U.S. National Poison Data System.

The new 203-page annual report of the American Association of Poison Control Centers, published online at http://www.aapcc.org/dnn/Portals/0/2010%20NPDS%20Annual%20Report.pdf, shows zero deaths from multiple vitamins; zero deaths from any of the B vitamins; zero deaths from vitamins A, C, D, or E; and zero deaths from any other vitamin.

Additionally, there were no deaths whatsoever from any amino acid or dietary mineral supplement. Read on

Flu vaccine has no good evidence

Dr. Damien Downing M.D. writes a good article on the flu vaccine. (OMNS, Jan 14, 2012) Is it wise to have the flu vaccine, or Tamiflu, or would you get better protection just from taking vitamin D? Having a vaccine should be a matter of personal choice; we don't think that government or insurance companies or medical societies should be telling you what to do. If you're bothering to read this then you're clearly smart enough to make your own decisions about your own health. While you are deciding, here is a second opinion.

Supplements, whole food sources or synthetic?

An interesting article from the Journal of Orthomolecular Medicine worth reading:

(OMNS, Jan 17, 2012) It's a nutritional "Catch 22": The public is told, confusingly: "Vitamins are good, but vitamin supplements are not. Only vitamins from food will help you. So just eat a good diet. Do not take supplements! But by the way, there is no difference between natural and synthetic vitamins."

Wait a minute. What's the real story here?  Read on

(OMNS, Feb 1, 2012) Workers with severe radiation exposure at the Fukushima nuclear plant had major reduction in cancer risk when supplemented with vitamin C and other anti-oxidative nutrients. Sixteen men aged between 32 and 59 years worked 5 to 6 weeks in a radiation contaminated area, collecting contaminated water, measuring radiation levels, operating heavy machinery, and removing debris. Blood samples were obtained to measure whole blood counts and blood chemistry, plasma levels of free DNA, and 47 cancer related gene expressions. Read on

Vitamin C Prevents Side Effects of Vaccines and Increases Its Effectiveness

Posted by Heather Caruso, This article was posted in News/Research

By potential toxicity considerations alone, then, there would seem to be no good reason not to pre- and post-medicate an infant or child with some amount of vitamin C to minimize or block the toxicity that might significantly affect a few. However, there is another compelling reason to make vitamin C an integral part of any vaccination protocol: Vitamin C has been documented to augment the antibody response of the immune system (Prinz et al., 1977; Vallance, 1977; Prinz et al., 1980; Feigen et al., 1982; Li and Lovell, 1985; Amakye-Anim et al., 2000; Wu et al., 2000; Lauridsen and Jensen, 2005; Azad et al., 2007). In addition to its general antitoxin properties (Levy, 2002), vitamin C has been demonstrated to be highly effective in neutralizing the toxic nature of mercury in all of its chemical forms. Read on

A high fibre diet increases the risk of Diverticulitis.

Posted by Heather Caruso, This article was posted in News/Research
at Mon, February 13, 2012 00:00

An interesting study on over 2000 participants found that those who ate the most amount of fibre had a higher incidence of diverticulitus. A painful condition that causes out pouching of the intestinal wall. It was previously thought that high fibre, red meat and fat diets and inactivity were related to diverticulitis. This is not the case. The study doesn't highlight whether the source or fibre if from vegetables and fruits or from mostly grains. Interesting research, but more information is needed. A diet high in grains is linked to many other diseases, and this information would be of benefit to the reader.

Diet and Weight More of a Factor than Genes in Dementia

Posted by Heather Caruso, This article was posted in News/Research

"For years, scientists thought that Alzheimer's was primarily genetic," said Gary Wenk, professor of neuroscience at Ohio State University. "We now believe that, while there's a genetic component, Alzheimer's is primarily a lifestyle disease."
People do carry genes, including APOE-4, that predispose them toward the disease, but whether they activate those genes depends heavily on their lifestyles, said Dr. Stuart Lipton, professor at Sanford-Burnham Research Institute, where he's scientific director of neuroscience, aging and stem-cell research.

Interesting News for Tea Drinkers!

Posted by Heather Caruso, This article was posted in News/Research
at Thu, February 02, 2012 00:00

A study released in Archives of Internal Medicine assessed the effects on blood pressure from consuming 3 cups of black tea daily. Australian researchers made note of 95 regular tea drinkers, ages 35 to 75, all of whom had daytime systolic blood pressure (SBP) between 115 and 150 mm Hg (in other words, the majority had elevated systolic blood pressure).

One study group consumed 3 cups a day of black tea to drink for six months and the control group was given a placebo that was colored and flavored to match the tea (and had the same caffeine content). Neither group was allowed to consume any other tea during the study.

At the end of six months, the tea drinkers had significantly lowered their blood pressure. Although it was a small amount (2 to 3 mm Hg), It was a significant finding. When viewed in the contex of the general population, researchers speculated that the decrease in a few points translate to a 10 percent reduction in the number of people with hypertension, as well as a 7 to 10 percent reduction in the risk of developing cardiovascular disease. Apples May Slow the Signs of Aging

Posted by Heather Caruso, This article was posted in News/Research
at Tue, January 31, 2012 00:00

Summary
A study conducted in Hong Kong evaluated the role of apples in slowing the aging process by altering genes that produce antioxidant enzymes in the body. The study used fruit flies by feeding them apple extracts and seeing what effect it had on their lifespan and aging process. Apples contain powerful antioxidants called apple polyphenols. The present study demonstrated that “apple polyphenols in the diet could prolong the mean lifespan, attenuate the oxidant induced mortality rate, and partially reverse the decline of the fruit flies’ ability to climb.”

Age Old Remedy, Cod Liver Oil, Looked At for Tuberculosis

Posted by Heather Caruso, This article was posted in Discussions
at Mon, January 30, 2012 00:00

Findings from a long-forgotten 1848 study suggest that an old-time remedy - cod liver oil - may be worth a second look for the treatment of tuberculosis today. Cod liver oil contains EPA, DHA from fish oil plus extra vitamin D and A which have known health benefits. Age old recommendations for TB are to get out in the sun daily, perhaps that was due to the sun's vitamin D effect on the body.  Read on

Researchers Suggest Diabetics Need to Take More than the RDA of B12

Posted by Heather Caruso, This article was posted in News/Research
at Thu, January 26, 2012 00:00

A new study has argued that people who have developed type 2 diabetes and are taking the oral drug metformin to treat it should take more than the recommended daily allowance of vitamin B12.

The research, which was published in Diabetes Care, assessed data from the National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey (NHANES) in the United States between 1999 and 2006. The NHANES data showed that the prevalence of biochemical B12 deficiency was greatest for people with type 2 diabetes taking metformin compared with those with type 2 diabetes but not taking metformin and those without diabetes.
