Breast Cancer Prevention
Breast cancer is a disease that everyone has been touched by. People either know someone who has had breast cancer or they have had it themselves. In Canada alone, this year 23,400 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer. There is a both a lifestyle and genetic component to this disease. Luckily there is an 88% survival rate if cancer is found in time. There is some interesting research about breast cancer and the genetic markers for this disease. These studies that have shown there is a weakness in those with the breast cancer marker gene and with their lack of ability to filter toxins as readily as someone without this marker.

Environmental factors that contribute to breast cancer:
-
Weight
-
Alcohol consumption
-
Smoking
-
A diet low in fibre and high in saturated fats
There is some control that one can have over the development of breast cancer. By eating a diet high in fibre, focusing on whole grains (brown rice, quinoa, steel cut oats etc), fresh fruits and vegetables (especially the brassica family), moderate amounts of nuts, lean proteins (especially fish like salmon because omega 3's have been shown to reduce breast cancer incidence) and legumes. This diet also helps with weight loss, detoxification of harmful compounds by supporting the liver and colon by keeping it moving and in turn hormone health. Ground flaxseed or chia seeds have also been found to contain lignans that help to bind up negative estrogens.
Alcohol consumption is something that should be limited to one to two glasses per week for women. Even moderate consumption has now been linked to breast cancer. A recent study published in the JAMA cited this fact. Smoking is a no brainer, quit immediately. Smoking creates an oxidative stress on the body which overloads detoxification enzymes and leads in turn to wild cells that contribute to cancer.
If you have breast cancer in your family, you may have a genetic weakness for liver detoxification. There are some excellent nutritional supplements that your practitioner can recommend to you. Other than supplements some dietary interventions that help to improve this detoxicification are eating plant foods that are members of the brassica family that contain sulforophane and diindolymethane and aid in cytochrome P450 detoxification and in turn prevent breast and prostate cancer. These vegetables are cauliflower, brocolli, cabbage, kale, bok choy, brassica and chinese cabbage.
